Manika Batra's tournament mindset: striving for personal excellence on the big stage

As the Hangzhou Asian Games approach, Manika Batra, India's top paddler, is embracing the tournament with a clean slate. In the last Asian Games she participated in, the 2018 edition held in Jakarta, Manika achieved remarkable success, winning a mixed doubles bronze alongside Sharath Kamal. This achievement marked India's first-ever table tennis medal at the Asian Games. However, as she prepares for Hangzhou, she acknowledges that the past is behind her, and she's focused on a fresh start.

A new perspective

Manika recognizes that the landscape of Indian table tennis has changed since her previous Asian Games appearance. She has evolved into a more experienced and established player, currently ranked 36th internationally. With this perspective, she approaches Hangzhou with new goals, emphasizing her focus on singles and team events, and partnering with G Sathiyan in mixed doubles.

Manika acknowledges the changes in her career and partnerships but remains determined to perform at her best. She aims to win against high-quality opponents and potentially secure a medal, but her primary focus is on delivering her best performance, regardless of the outcome. Her track record shows that she often elevates her game during major tournaments, defeating top-ranked players and making a mark on the international stage.

Balancing preparation

As her career has progressed, Manika emphasizes the importance of recovery and rehabilitation to maintain peak performance. She pays special attention to areas like the knees, ankles, and back, essential for her tall stature and playing style. She has also improved her forehand, a key factor in her recent successes.

Manika's confidence has grown, particularly after the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the Asian Cup. She recognizes that executing her skills under pressure in tournaments is crucial, not just in the Asian Games but in future competitions as well.
